Information and Referral Specialist: Flint, MI

Career Alliance, Customized Works!

The Customized Employment Project in Flint, Michigan is implementing strategies to ensure that people with disabilities are served well through their One-Stops. Through the efforts of the Customized Works! project, funded by the DOL Office of Disability Employment Policy, they have established an Information and Referral Specialist (I&R) position.

The I&R position was established to assist all customers who need additional time and support to access Career Alliance services effectively. It is not necessary for people to self-identify the presence of a disability nor specific barriers to employment in order to avail themselves of this support. Staff is available to help individuals get oriented to the system, to identify and access typical services, as well as supplemental support services for those who are eligible. Examples of supports being provided include telephone access, transportation passes, and assistance with using assistive technology available in the resource room. Based on individual eligibility, Career Alliance co-referrals are occurring with non-mandated partners who offer additional supports, such as food and shelter.

The I&R staff person is located in the resource room with staff of Employment Services. This visibility will maximize usage of the services, as well as create opportunities to demonstrate to One-Stop staff effective service delivery strategies for customers who might otherwise drop out of or get lost in the system. Data will be collected to quantify the time needed and types of support service most utilized to assist customers who are not able to effectively use self-directed services. As the value of such services is recognized, Customized Works! staff aspire to have this position sustained beyond the life of the project through WIA funding.
