Employment Success for DC Through Resource Ownership
Georgia Workforce Action Grant: Jobs for All: An Olmstead Initiative
DC enjoys his work as a dog groomer, it keeps him smiling all the time because he gets to work with animals. His favorite part of the job is working directly with the animals, "I love the dogs," he says.
In order to create this customized position, DC worked with a customized employment team from "Jobs for All." Although he had no prior experience with dog grooming, the person-centered planning assessment conducted as part of the job carving process picked up on DC's love of animals and interest in grooming. Using grant and Individual Assistance monies, DC was able to purchase equipment for dog grooming, such as a Three Arm Bandit” drying tool that helps dry three dogs at once, a hydraulic table, and a "Clipper Vac" system to facilitate cleanup after shaving or clipping dogs. This resource ownership was an asset in the process of creating a customized position for DC.
The customized employment team engaged in negotiations with Tim Brendel, the owner of a new dog grooming business, "Tender Loving Grooming" in Dallas, Georgia. A resource-ownership arrangement was established whereby DC brings his equipment into Tender Loving Grooming and uses it as he carries out his duties and other employees can use the equipment on the days DC is not working. Mr. Brendel hired DC to work as a groomer three days a week for five hours per day. Through resource ownership and the efforts of DC and his customized employment team, DC has a job he is happy with, working with animals and doing what he loves.
